Verbs express action or state of being. The verb sein, meaning "to be," is the most common verb in German. The present tense is as follows*:

SINGULAR
 

ich bin I am
Sie sind you are
er ist he is
sie ist she is
es ist it is
man ist "people" are

PLURAL
 

wir sind we are
Sie sind you are
sie sind they are
