Demonstrative adjectives ("this," "that," "these," "those") must agree in gender and number with the nouns they modify.
 

  MASCULINE FEMININE
Singular ce café cette lampe
  cet hôtel cette étudiante
Plural ces cafés ces lampes
  ces hôtels ces étudiantes

Cet is used in front of nouns beginning with vowels or silent h-, as in the example cet hôtel.

EXAMPLES
 

Cette lampe ne marche pas. 
This lamp is not working.
Je préfère cet hôtel. 
I prefer this hotel.

Ce is often used as an informal pronoun in the expression c'est—"that's, that is."
 

C'est formidable.
That's great.
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
What is this?
N'est-ce pas?
Isn't that so?


Examples of Ce

  • À propos, cette lampe ne marche pas.
  • Ce climatiseur est hors service.
  • Cette chaise est cassée.
  • Pardon. Est-ce que ces chaises sont libres?
