Most attributive adjectives form the superlative by adding -st to the positive form.
 

slow langsam der langsamste Bus
nice schön das schönste Hotel

Adjectives ending in -d, -t, -z, -ß, or -s add -est:
 

far weit der weiteste Weg
direct direkt die direkteste Route
healthy gesund das gesundeste Menü

Adjectives which take an umlaut in the comparative also umlaut in the superlative:
 

long lang der längste Tag
old alt der älteste Bahnhof
short kurz die kürzeste Minute

The irregular superlative forms are noted in the vocabulary.
 

good gut (besser, best) das beste Hotel
big groß (größer, größt) das größte Gebäude

The superlative form of adverbs and predicate adjectives is a phrase beginning with am.
 

Er fährt am schnellsten.
He drives fastest.


Examples of Superlative

  • Gut. Dann will ich zu Fuß gehen. Wie komme ich am schnellsten zur Post?
  • Gut. Am besten, Sie nehmen ein Taxi, wenn Sie eins finden können.
  • Kein Problem. Ich bin der beste Taxifahrer in ganz Frankfurt.
