The preposition chez ("at the place of," "at the residence of," "at the office of," etc.) occurs only before a noun or pronoun referring to a person:
 

Nous allons chez Roger.
We’re going to Roger’s.
Je vais chez le dentiste.
I'm going to the dentist’s.
Il va dîner chez sa sœur.
He’s going to have dinner at his sister’s.
Vous êtes chez Sylvie Balland?
You’re at Sylvie Balland’s?
Oui, je suis chez elle.
Yes, I'm at her house.

The preposition à is used when the English "to" is positioned in front of a noun that refers to a thing, not a person.
 

Nous allons au café.
We go to the café.
Elle est à la banque.
She's at the bank.


Examples of Chez

  • Non, merci! Je dois dîner chez ma sœur, et puis, je suis au régime.
  • On dîne chez moi samedi?
  • Pierre, tu peux passer chez le boucher pour acheter un beau petit os pour Ralph (le chien)?
