Past Participles (Irregular)

Many of the verbs you have encountered have a Past Participle that cannot easily be derived from its infinitive. Here are some of the more commonly used Past Participles:
 

asseoir assis to sit
avoir eu to have
boire bu to drink
connaître connu to know
croire cru to believe
devoir dû to have to
dire dit to say, tell
être été  to be
faire fait to do
mettre mis to put, place
pouvoir pu to be able to
prendre pris to take
savoir su to know
venir venu to come
voir vu to see
vouloir voulu to want
 


Examples of Past Participles (Irregular)

  • Merci, mais j'y suis allée la semaine dernière.
  • Je suis désolée. Je n'ai pas eu le temps d'acheter les billets.
  • Martine m'a écrit une lettre.
  • J'ai un gros mal de tète. Je crois que j'ai trop bu hier soir.
