Numerical Adjectives
(4th of 6) |
Numerical adjectives are words which give estimated numbers rather than specific ones.
The Numerical Adjectives viele, mehrere, einige The German numerical adjectives viele (many), mehrere (several) and einige (some, a few, a couple of) are attributive adjectives and take adjective endings. Note in the following examples viele takes the same ending as the other adjectivesinteressant and the adjective noun Deutsch. If there is no article, use the definite article ending on the adjective instead.
In the cases where a definite article word precedes numerical adjectives, the adjectives take endings according to special rules discussed above: After any other article ending, add -n.
The Numerical Adjective ein paar The numerical adjective ein paar (some, a few, a couple of) takes no endings. The Interrogative Article wie viele The interrogative wie viele (how many) takes the same endings as viele, mehrere and einige. Wenige Versus Einige or Ein Paar The numerical adjectives ein paar and einige are interchangeable
in meaning "some" or "a few."
By contrast, wenige, which also takes attributive
adjective endings, means "few" or "very few" and, when used with zu, "too few."
