Making Appointments

To make an appointment in German, use the preposition um plus the clock time.

Kommen Sie bitte um zehn Uhr dreißig.
Please come at ten thirty.

Expressing Dates

Use the German prepositional contraction am (=on) in giving dates or weekdays.

Sie hat am Sonntag gearbeitet.
She worked on Sunday.
Er ist am 4. März 1957 geboren.
He was born on March 4, 1957.

Giving the Date in Correspondence

At the head of a letter, give the date as follows:

Montag, den 4. März 1957
or: Montag, den vierten März 1957

You may put the place where the letter is being written, e.g. Waiblingen, stands instead of naming the weekday:

Waiblingen, den 4. März 1957
or: Waiblingen, den vierten März 1957

Put a comma after the name of the day (or place) and a period after the ordinal numeral.
