Quel sale temps!
What nasty weather!

Quel can be used to express both "what" and "what a" in exclamatory phrases. Unlike English, there is never an article between quel and the noun it modifies. Quel always agrees with the noun it modifies:
 

Quelle folle idée!
What a crazy idea!
Quels beaux enfants!
What pretty children!

Que can be used to express "how" in exclamatory remarks:
 

Que vous êtes belle! 
How beautiful you are!
Qu'il est paresseux!
How lazy he is!
Que votre appartement est grand!
How big your apartment is!


Examples of Quel...! and Que...!

  • Eh bien! Quel sale temps!
  • Quelle belle fille!
  • Que votre fille est belle!
