The equivalent of the verb "to be" in French is être. It is an irregular verb, meaning that it has a peculiar pattern when conjugated. Its forms in the Present tense are as follows:

ÊTRE—"to be"
 

je suis I am
tu es you are (the familiar form)
il, elle est he/she/it is
nous sommes we are
vous êtes you are (polite and plural form)
ils, elles sont they are

EXAMPLES
 

Je suis à Paris.
I am in Paris.

 
Jean et Marie sont français.
Jean and Marie are French.


Examples of Être

  • Je suis Mme Bertrand.
  • La station de taxis est là-bas.
  • Vous cherchez M. Laborde? Je suis désolé. Je ne sais pas où il est.
