To express ongoing actions, even if they began in the past, Germans use the present tense.
 

Ich wohne jetzt in Frankfurt.
I am living in Frankfurt now.
Ich wohne seit 40 Jahren in Frankfurt.
I have been living in Frankfurt for 40 years.


Examples of Ongoing Actions

  • Ich bin seit gestern in Frankfurt und möchte mich mit Ihnen treffen.
  • Nee, ich bin ein alter Mainzer, aber ich wohne seit 40 Jahren in Frankfurt.
