Polite Requests

Many of the verbs you have seen have been in the Present, Past or Future tense with the possible exception of the following two verbs in the Conditional:
 

Je voudrais.
I would like (expressing a wish)
Pourrais-je?/Est-ce que je pourrais?
May I? (asking permission)

The Conditional forms of vouloir and pouvoir give a polite tone to a request.
 

Est-ce que je pourrais avoir une baguette?
May I have a baguette?
Je voudrais une baguette, s'il vous plaît
I'd like a baguette, please.


Examples of Polite Requests

  • Enfin! Je voudrais un rôti de bœuf pour six personnes.
  • Non, merci. Pourrais-je avoir un os pour mon chien?
  • Vous ne pourriez pas m'aider un instant?
