Negation with the Negative Indefinite Article kein

The article kein negates nouns modified by ein and nouns which do not have articles in the corresponding positive statement. Compare these statements:

POSITIVE STATEMENT
 

Ein Problem. A problem.

NEGATION
 

Kein Problem. No problem.

POSITIVE STATEMENT
 

Gibt es hier Drogerien? Are there any drugstores here?

NEGATION
 

Gibt es hier keine Drogerien? Aren’t there any drugstores here?

POSITIVE STATEMENT
 

Ja, ich habe jetzt Zeit. Yes, I have some time now.

NEGATION
 

Nein, ich habe jetzt keine Zeit. No, I don’t have any time now.

POSITIVE STATEMENT
 

Das war ein schöner Tag. That was a nice day.

NEGATION
 

Das war kein schöner Tag. That wasn’t a nice day.

POSITIVE STATEMENT
 

Das sind deutsche Münzen. Those are German coins.

NEGATION
 

Das sind keine deutschen Münzen. Those aren’t German coins.

Proper names are not negated by kein. Nicht is used for names.

POSITIVE STATEMENT
 

Das ist Fred Holtzmann. That is Fred Holtzmann.

NEGATION
 

Das ist nicht Fred Holtzmann. That isn’t Fred Holtzmann.

Kein takes the endings of ein in the singular and those of die in the plural. Kein affects attributive adjective endings just as the other articles do.

Examples of Negation with kein

  • Nein. Ich hatte keinen Durchfall. Mir war nicht übel.
  • Es ist kein heftiger Schmerz. Ich fühle mich ganz allgemein nicht wohl.
