Au is a contraction of à+le—"of the, from the." When the preposition à precedes the article le, it is contracted to au. As with de, there is no change with la or l'.
 

Elle travaille au consulat.
She works at the consulate.
 
Elle est à la banque.
She is at the bank.
 
Tournez à droite au feu rouge.
Turn right at the red light.
 
Elle attend le bus à l'arrêt.
She's waiting for the bus at the bus stop.

  • Avenue Gabriel, madame, au numéro 2, je crois.
  • Excusez-moi, comment est-ce que je fais pour aller à l'ambassade américaine?
  • Martin, est-ce que tu as déjà parlé aux enfants?
  • Je suis allé à la charcuterie pour acheter des crudités.
