In a previous section, you learned the possessive adjectives mon, ma, mes ("my"). Here you will practice using those possessive adjectives, along with the informal ton, ta, tes and the formal votre and vos both meaning "your." In English, the gender of the possessive adjective depends on the possessor's gender: "he has his book"; "she has her purse." In French, the gender of the possession (not the possessor) is what determines whether the masculine or feminine form is used for singular nouns.

  MASCULINE FEMININE
SINGULAR ton ta
PLURAL tes tes
SINGULAR votre votre
PLURAL vos vos

Note that votre makes no distinction between masculine and feminine, and that the plural tes and vos apply to both masculine and feminine.

ton père (m.) your father
ta sœur (f.) your sister
tes frères (m.) your brothers
tes sœurs (f.) your sisters

votre famille (f.) your family
vos enfants (m.) your children

When a noun starts with a vowel sound, ton is used regardless of the gender of the noun:

ton ami (m.) your friend
ton amie (f.) your friend

Votre and vos are polite forms, used mainly to indicate the possessions of colleagues, strangers, and people with whom you have no close, personal relationship (in the same way the subject pronoun vous is used).

Examples of Possession: Votre

  • Votre famille est très internationale.
  • J'aimerai faire la connaissance de vos parents.
