In a previous section, you learned that avoir is an auxiliary for the Passé Composé. Être is an auxiliary for intransitive verbs (i.e., those which do not act on an object). In addition, être is the auxiliary used with reflexive verbs:

J'y suis allée une fois.
I (f.) went there once.
Le train est arrivé en retard.
The train arrived late.
Elle s'est levée de bonne heure.
She got up early.
Je me suis retrouvé au centre ville.
I found myself downtown.
Je me suis dépêché.
I hurried.
Nous nous sommes réveillés à neuf heures.
We woke up at nine o'clock.

The Past Participle agrees in gender and number with the subject; remember that reflexive pronouns also agree with the subject.



Examples of Passé Composé with Être

  • Non, nous n'en avons plus. J'ai passé une commande mais elle n'est pas encore arrivée.
  • Hier je suis allée au marché pour acheter de l'ail.
  • Mon petit chien est mort il ya deux mois.
